Pedagogies
Quality teaching is achieved by presenting lessons which are challenging, centred on significant concepts, students are engaged and where students can build on prior knowledge and appreciate the significance and relevance of what they are learning.
Inquiry based approaches are employed to help students see that there are different interpretations of one event. Students are asked questions and invited to answer and ask their own questions. They are invited to use evidence and draw inferences based on the evidence.
The design of this unit is influenced by constructivist theories and the understanding that learning is a social process. The aim is to first investigate students’ existing knowledge before launching into inquiry. Further, students are encouraged to work in groups to make inquiries.
Students are required to think critically about events.
The Plan aims to engage students through use of ICT, experiences such as performing, meeting an Aboriginal Liaison Officer, attending a performance of aboriginal music/theatre/dance, visiting sites in City of Sydney evidencing/significant to early Aboriginal habitation and early British Colonisation.
